Currently, Year 9 student Zadi Kadima holds the title of State Champion in the School Sports Victoria (SSV) Cross Country event for his age group.

One day, the 15-year-old hopes to hold a title at an international level, representing Australia at the Olympics in the 5 and 10km events.

Across this year’s Cross Country season, Zadi placed 1st in the school, district, region and state events for Under 16 boys.

He also placed 3rd in the Athletics Victoria All Schools XCR State Championships and over the weekend, travelled to Tasmania to compete in the Athletics Australia National XCR Championships representing Team Victoria.

“I like winning and adding to my collection of medals but also I just love running and I work really hard at it so it's good to get the reward for it,” Zadi said.

“I also like encouraging other kids to run and go for it.”

Zadi is currently coached by Liz Matthews from Team Matthews Running based in Melbourne.

“She sets me weekly programs that I have to follow in my personal time, mostly on my own and sometimes with a friend or with Shepparton Runners Club,” he said.

“Sometimes I can train with the rest of Team Matthews in Melbourne - I wish I could do that more because it pushes you harder when you're with the group and have someone faster than you to train with.”

Across six days of the week, Zadi undertakes three sessions to build strength and speed and three long jogs to build stamina. He usually completes around 80kms per week.

“GSSC has been really supportive with transport to all the SSV events and also gave me the first GSSC uniform singlet,” he said.

“The teachers are really encouraging, especially Ms Fiddes. I've also been part of gym class at school which has been good.”

Year 9 student, Ashlee Meyer also had a successful day out at the SSV State Championships held earlier last term, placing 8th in her age group.

“I managed to come 1st in the first three stages and 8th in the state and placed first in my age group at school,” Ashlee said.

“I love distance running and I enjoy any distance up to a 10k and hope to go further in the future and push my limits.

“GSSC has been great organising Cross Country events and getting us there and supporting us to go further and represent the school.”

Ashlee said currently she completes her own training to improve her running, but would love to join a club in the future.

“I hope to get better and aim higher next year at state and hopefully maybe compete in some races outside of school so I can get more into it,” Ashlee said.

“I’m proud of myself for going how I did and kind of surprised because I didn’t expect top 10 in the state.”

Congratulations to all students who represented GSSC at State Championships. You have done the College, yourselves and your families proud.
