Recently, 51 of our Year 9 Outdoor Education students attended a five-day camp at Rubicon Outdoor Centre in Thornton.

The week’s focus was on how water moved through the environment and the significance of how water connects people all around the world. To help students build a deeper connection with the environment, they participated in three main activities, including cross-country skiing at Lake Mountain, white water rafting on the Big River and mountain biking around Lake Eildon.

Not only did students learn about the importance of water in these environments, but they also challenged themselves with navigation, leadership, teamwork and resilience as they lead themselves and their peers in group work throughout the camp.

At the end of the week, students had the opportunity to show their understanding of the local catchment area by developing a performance, poster, story book or stop-motion presentation on the journey of a water droplet. Rubicon teachers are working on assessing these projects and will be providing feedback to each group in the coming weeks.

The teachers at Rubicon and all attending staff would like to thank each student who came along, as everyone represented our school with pride by demonstrating our core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, and aspiration.

In fact, our Executive Principal Barbara O’Brien was thrilled to receive the following feedback from Rubicon Outdoor School Principal, Andrew Monson.

“I’m following up on our work with your year 9 students recently and wanted to acknowledge the wonderful work that is obviously occurring at your school. I wanted to reach out and acknowledge the positive manner in which your year 9 students engaged in their learning at Rubicon whilst with us. It is a credit to you and your staff, and no doubt reflective of the consistent and focused work being undertaken at your school. Your year 9’s embraced the learning opportunity before them and stretched themselves, all whilst working to maintain a positive demeanor and be respectful of one another. Your teaching team were exceptional in the provision of differentiated supports for students and the ability for students to hear and engage in the “Right Words, Right place” work in another school context, supported by staff from both schools highlighted the importance of our work together.”

Well done on a wonderful week of adventure and learning!
