Our college gathered for the final whole-school assembly of 2025, proudly led for the first time by our incoming 2026 College Captains. Centred on the theme of teamwork, the assembly highlighted the strength, unity and talent that continue to define our college community.
We were honoured to welcome Kim Gray, who currently serves within the Australian Army Aviation Corps as an Aircrewman on MRH-90 and Blackhawk helicopters. Kim is now a Military Support Officer with Defence Member and Family Support in Wagga Wagga.
Kim spoke about the core values that drive effective teamwork in the Army and how closely they mirror our values at GSSC. She highlighted the importance of striving for excellence, acting with integrity, showing respect for diverse perspectives, and demonstrating responsibility and service to others. These values, she explained, are just as crucial in the classroom as they are in high-pressure military environments. We sincerely thank Kim for joining us and inspiring our students in our final assembly of the year.
Our assembly showcased many forms of talent, starting with a talented school band delivering an energetic performance of Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer,” lifting the whole room and setting a celebratory tone. This was later followed by a fun and high-energy dance performance that quickly became a crowd favourite, with students lighting up the stage through their enthusiasm and teamwork.
The assembly then celebrated our outstanding sporting achievements throughout the term. Students who excelled in a range of sports were recognised for their skill, dedication and teamwork, both within school competitions and at regional and state levels. Highlights included our GMDSSV Track & Field champions, Hume Region medal winners, and our Senior Girls State Soccer Team for their determination and strong performances throughout the season.
GMDSSV Track & Field Success GSSC achieved a triple victory at the GMDSSV Track & Field Championships - winning:
Male Aggregate
Female Aggregate
Overall Championship
We recognised our 2025 Age Group Champions on stage as they received their medals.
Hume Region Track & Field Championships 38 GSSC athletes competed in Albury, once again achieving phenomenal results:
1st place overall for the fourth consecutive year
19 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze medals
School Sport Victoria State Championships After success at Hume Region, 14 athletes represented GSSC at the SSV State Championships at Lakeside Stadium, achieving outstanding results at a high level of competition.
Senior Girls State Soccer Team Our Senior Girls continued their strong form at the SSV State Finals:
Narrow 1–2 loss to Brunswick Secondary
Impressive 3–2 win over Ballarat High
Close 1–2 match against Castlemaine Secondary
Their determination and teamwork were outstanding throughout the tournament.
House Competitions We celebrated the champions of our house competitions across the year:
Dodgeball: Kiewa
Basketball: Murray (Senior), Campaspe (Middle)
Soccer: Warrego
Volleyball: Ovens
In addition to sporting success, the assembly celebrated exceptional individual accomplishments. Alex Ferguson was recognised for his outstanding efforts in the ICAS Mathematics competition, placing among the top students internationally. Mrs O’Brien presented the award, and the entire school joined in congratulating Alex on this outstanding accomplishment. Savannah Alcaniz (Year 7) was recognised for placing 1st in the Years 5–8 category of the “Through Your Own Lens” Photography Competition, with judges describing her work as “a unanimous winner with striking impact.” We also congratulated the winners of our MasterChef Competition, Fatima Chaman Ali and Amenye Sikwese Parra (Year 9, Ovens), for their creativity, skill and culinary flair.
We heard from students who took part in this year’s camps, sharing stories of adventure, challenge and growth. At the Year 9 Leadership Camp at Gnurad-Gundidj, students challenged themselves, developed independence, and strengthened their teamwork through shared adventures. Meanwhile, our Unit 1 & 2 Outdoor Education students reflected on a year packed with hands-on learning, from surfing and rock climbing at Mt Arapiles to hiking, skiing, mountain biking, canoeing, white-water rafting, and sailing - experiences that built resilience, confidence, and a love for learning beyond the classroom.
The assembly was a vibrant celebration of the teamwork, talent, and achievements that have defined 2025 at GSSC. It reminded us that when students support each other, collaborate, and work together, remarkable things can be achieved. As we approach the final weeks of the year, we look forward to carrying the values of teamwork, aspiration, integrity, respect, and responsibility into 2026.
