Telstra has partnered with Greater Shepparton Secondary College and RMIT University to equip 100 Year 10 and Year 11 students with a new laptop computer to keep and free internet access for the household for up to two years.

The pilot project is aimed at low income households to track study activities, daily routines and internet use over an extended period. To take part in Telstra Connected Students Program, eligible households must have:

  • A child in Year 10 or Year 11 enrolled at Greater Shepparton Secondary College
  • A Low Income Healthcare Card
  • An interest and ability to help university researchers understand the impact of internet access costs

Participating households will be offered a monthly broadband internet plan for the duration of their participation in the project, which may last up to two years. Years 10 and 11 students in participating households will also be provided with a laptop – theirs to keep at the conclusion of the project.

Participation in the Telstra Connected Students Program involves participation in an evaluation project conducted by researchers at RMIT University. This would involve a researcher coming to the student’s home (or agreed place of choosing) and asking questions about household work and study activities, daily routines and internet use. The researcher will visit two to three times over the duration of the project to ask these questions.

Participation will also involve completing surveys on the employment, study activities and internet use of parents, carers and other members of the household. Surveys will be conducted every six months for up to two years.

If your household is interested in participating, please submit the Expression of Interest form.

Greater Shepparton Secondary College is well prepared to provide remote learning to students if required next term.

Our student management system, Compass, will be used to provide lessons and team classes. Our teachers and support staff are working to provide the best online learning we can should students be required to work remotely when Term 2 recommences on 15 April. For those students who don’t have access to a computer and the internet, hard copies of learning activities will be made available for collection at their campus next term.

For parents and carers who are not already familiar with Compass, please refer to this instructional document: pdf Compass Introduction & Logging In (Parent) 26 03 2020 (331 KB)

If you encounter any difficulty logging in or using the program, our Compass Helpline will be available from 9am to 3pm, 6-9 April on 03 5858 9882.

We believe that it is very important to maintain our relationships with students and families. During the break, our Learning Mentors will ring students in their groups to touch base and see how they are going.
