Greater Shepparton Secondary College (GSSC) has released the first in a series of inspirational and instructional videos to help embed its values in the school’s inaugural year.

The first of four videos will be used as a teaching tool in Term 3, with all GSSC students encouraged to discuss “Respect” – the importance of valuing other people, appreciating our differences and understanding how we came to live, work and thrive together.

The Respect video features community and cultural leaders as well as recent students and current staff. Over the calendar year, further educational videos will explain the importance of GSSC’s other key values: Aspiration (giving our best in everything we do); Integrity (being open and honest in everything we do); Responsibility (taking charge of who we are, what we do and what we say).

“All our students meet daily with their Learning Mentors and we will devote some of this time to use these videos to engage students in our values and expectations,” Executive Principal Genevieve Simson said.

“The first ‘Respect’ video is very powerful and is being used in the start of Term 3 to emphasise just how diverse our community is and how we must respect our differences to really appreciate and understand each other.”

The Respect video will be used in future years, with GSSC to add in messages from other ethnic groups and community leaders to keep the content current and encompassing of all cultures.

“The messages on this “Respect” video are too important to be lost as a teaching resource produced and used in 2020,” Ms Simson said.

“The values of GSSC were determined by parents, students and the community. They are meant to last for decades as meaningful and important messages to future generations and graduates of GSSC.”

The final message of the Respect video is delivered by Ben Murphy, a young teacher at the Mooroopna campus of GSSC. It includes a couple of questions to prompt classroom and wider community discussion:

“What does respect look like for you? And what does respect look like for your school?”

We've produced pre-recorded presentations to help our senior students with course options and subject selection next year. These "premiere" next week with links posted on Compass.
• Tuesday 28 July (7pm) – Online presentation for parents of Year 10 students on 2021 (Year 11) course options
• Wednesday 29 July (7pm) – Online presentation for parents of Year 12 students exploring employment or training options for 2021. Year 12s will receive information packs next week with materials referred to in the presentation.
Health measures mean we can't do these presentations in person but our Careers staff will be online both nights to respond to questions via email or your child’s Microsoft Teams account. The presentation links will remain for families to view and review over coming weeks.
Stay tuned for further information sessions and videos translated into other languages.
